Grappling with Food Deception

Dear Brand Doctor:

I realize the importance of reading labels. But isn’t it safe to assume the produce department is a safe haven for healthy foods? I subscribe to the notion that an apple a day can help keep the doctor away!

Dear Fruit ‘n’ Veggie Lover,

Maybe in a perfect world one could assume that the produce department is a safe haven for chemical-free fruits and veggies.

Unfortunately, this is the REAL world and that’s simply not the case. It’s a sin against nature, but some food manufacturers have found a way to sneak chemical additives into our precious produce!

Case in Point: Grapple® brand apples – Looks like an apple. Tastes like a grape!

Ingredients: Apples, Natural & Artificial Grape Flavor
Price range: $4.58 to $5.99 for a pack of four apples

At first glance, it seems like this could be a hybrid fruit spawned by carefully combining grape and apple seeds to create a yummy taste sensation of two delicious fruits in one handy snack. However, after decoding the fine print, here’s what we uncovered.

The manufacturer takes Washington Extra Fancy Fuji apples and infuses them with grape flavoring. It’s a patent-pending process that’s complex, according to the Web site. But what it means is that they basically inject a cocktail mix of ingredients that includes concentrated grape flavor and pure water. Then they proudly proclaim on their Web site: “With childhood obesity increasing at alarming rates, Grapple brand apples could go a long way to improving the eating habits of children and introducing them to more produce.”

Let’s Review

They took a perfectly healthy, all-natural apple, and added a chemical process to give it a “grape flavor” in order to get kids to eat more apples…at a hefty price tag of more than a buck per apple.

Uh, sorry Mr. Crap Apple Producer – this product is definitely a Healthy Food Imposter.

Reality Check

There’s a bushel of research that shows how the massive amounts of chemical additives we are putting into our food supply, and then into the bodies of children, are contributing to the soaring rates of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic disease.

Adding chemicals to fruit is not the solution, it’s a process that only adds to the problem.

Bottom Line: It’s not nice to mess with Mother Nature. Stick with good, old-fashioned, unprocessed apples and be sure to read EVERY food label!
